October 2020

Year 1 have settled well into their new class and Mrs Southward is really proud of us! Here are some of the things we have been doing.

Autumn Walk

Year 1 went for a walk around the school grounds to look for the signs of autumn. We found that the leaves were turning red, gold and brown and falling of the trees. Some of the trees now had berries and fruit like apples or pears where the flowers had been in summer. We really enjoyed playing with the spinners from the sycamore tree and found out that these were really seeds!

Dental hygienist

Year 1 (along with Year 2) had a Zoom call with Lucy the dental hygienist. We wrote questions to ask her and she answered them. She demonstrated how to clean our teeth using a big toothbrush and an enormous set of teeth!

Lucy also told us that we get 22 baby teeth and 28 adult ones. It is really important that we brush our teeth and our gums and tongue to keep our mouths healthy.

Another tip, Lucy gave us,  is to only eat sugar at mealtimes and only drink water and milk between meals because they do not contain sugar.

Wizards and witches

We pretended to be witches and wizards and made a spell to make a fabulous new toy of our choosing. We read lots of stories to inspire us like Room on the Broom, Winnie the Witch and Meg and Mog and then we acted out how we made the spell.

We added all sorts of creepy ingredients such as slimy toads, fidget spinners, fluffy squirrels and a grizzly grasshoppers to the cauldron. Then we uttered the magic phrase, “Abracadabra, alakazam, make a great toy as fast as you can!”
